Lohan Ratwatte granted bail

Former State Minister Lohan Ratwatte was granted bail today over a road accident caused while driving under the influence of alcohol.

According to police sources, the incident occurred in Kollupitiya, where Ratwatte’s vehicle was involved in a collision.

Preliminary investigations revealed that the former State Minister was under the influence of alcohol at the time of the accident.

He was released on bail after being produced before the Colombo Fort Magistrate’s Court earlier today (9).

What a joke this is. how would the judge react if a poor man was sued for stealing a coconut because he was hungry? Would the court grant bail for poor man? The police would probably beat the poor guy up and not grant bail, because of he´s social status. Will we see any changes in the new government compared to previous regimes? Is this for we changed the system? The LAW must be equal to all.. No one above the LAW, except the Almighty.

Almighty? In Sri Lanka all politicians, whether they belong to ruling party or opposition parties are Almighties. Things are always soft on them.

If the Government wishes to apply law equally to all Citizens, then they have to do do lots of work in the AG's Office, Prosecuting Offices and Justice Department to weed out incompetent staff.

When a bail application is submitted if the AG's office or Prosecution do not object to it, the bail is granted. Isn't that how it works?
