NPP to formulate mechanism to avoid competition for preferential votes among its contenders

Colombo, October 05 (Daily Mirror)- Claiming that the National People’s Power (NPP) is  finalising its nomination lists at district level for the upcoming  General Election, NPP General Secretary Dr. Nihal Abeysinghe said  yesterday the NPP is preparing a mechanism to avoid competition for  preferential votes among the NPP contenders.

He told the Daily Mirror that however, the NPP will not  intervene in any way in the elected members to Parliament and that NPP  will make sure that all members elected by the people through  preferential votes will enter Parliament.

“However, we are preparing a mechanism to avoid competition  for preferential votes among the contenders of the NPP. We will have a  meeting with all NPP candidates contesting for the election and inform them of the matter,” he said.

Dr. Abeysinghe said unlike in other parties, nomination  lists of the NPP are being prepared at district level and added that finalised lists will be reviewed in the head office, Colombo.

He said the NPP will include more female candidates in its  nomination lists and national list, while both lists will include more professionals as well.

When asked if any new parties or groups would align with the NPP for the General Election, he said political parties or groups would not be taken into the NPP and said numerous requests have been received to contest under NPP banner and that such individuals have been asked to consult nomination boards at district level.
