Nation’s duty is to inspire youth to combat drug problem

Colombo, December 1 (Daily Mirror) - It is the nation's responsibility to fight the drug problem by inspiring positive changes in the minds of children and youth, not just by depending on laws, Prime Minister Dr. Harini Amarasuriya said.

Speaking as the chief guest at the award ceremony for the winners of the 2024 All-Ceylon Art and Animation Video Competition, she said that the fight against drugs is a top priority and an urgent responsibility under the new government's programme.

She also said that law enforcement efforts must remain a priority to combat national and international drug trafficking, which poses a serious threat to the country's future by triggering domestic, economic and social crises.

While appreciating the services by the Sri Lanka Navy and the security forces, the Prime Minister highlighted the urgent need for a programme to combat drug addiction and to rehabilitate the addicts.

Prime Minister Amarasuriya also said that children should be supported to build a strong future by going beyond merely informing them about the dangers of drugs and providing them with opportunities to showcase their creative talents.

I think its easier to jail or eliminate the importers, as we all know who the big players are. But none of the governments managed to do it..No confidence in NPP either.

Finally - a fresh perspective. The environment is full of stimuli, education system forces children with diverse talents into the same block, parents are also highly stressed and lack capacity to deal with everything when everything has increased in both volume and complexity. The medical practitioners are woefully inept to treat patients as dignified individual human beings and allow judgement and prejudice lead the way. You cannot blame the drugs - when most components in these drugs are anyway available for prescription under different names. This needs to be handled humanely and intelligently. I doubt Sri Lanka will reach these levels (ex: Portugal) even with NPP in power because our people are always looking for the scapegoat that deep diving into the problem to find the most reasonable and justified means. To anyone bashing drugs, go look at your own medicine cabinet or refrigerator and see the harm that is dispensed through a systems far more dangerous than drug dealers.
