New speed limit rules in two weeks

Colombo, July 12 (Daily Mirror) - State Minister of Transport, Lasantha Alagiyawanna announced that a gazette with the necessary regulations on speed limits, aimed at reducing road accidents, will be issued within the next two weeks.

State Minister for Transport Lasantha Alagiyawanna, made this statement during a news conference held yesterday (11) at the Presidential Media Centre.

In his comments, the State Minister further said that in 2023, there were 2,214 reported road accidents resulting in 2,321 deaths. As of 30th June, 1,103 road accidents have been reported this year, with 1,154 fatalities. To address this issue, our Ministry has implemented various programmes aimed at reducing the number of road accidents.

The National Council for Road Safety has allocated Rs. 50 million to the Sri Lanka Police for the purchase of necessary speed control equipment. Additionally, the Ministry of Transport will issue a gazette with new road speed limit regulations within the next two weeks, he said.

Speed limits is only one side of the problem. But effective communication is a worse problem. Effectively we have two speeds 70 kmh and 50 kmh. There are thousands of posts indicating so many things along the way and they are all colourd black and white. Why not colour them red and green? The red for 50 and the green for 70.

Present speed limits are okay if the Police act on all Motorist speeding. They should allow tolerance of 5% over the speed limit for drivers and slap fines over that in slabs. The licence should be taken away after 3 offences in a year ... Sent to pass a driving course ,Pay the fine and recover the licence. The most accidents taking place are with Heavy construction Vehicles , CTB and private Transport Buses... The police look the other side when these Vehicles Pass by... The speed Guns should be calibrated every 3 months by authorities. Also, the Speed Guns should come with Photo's of the Vehicle and once clocked over speeding , the images downloaded at the police station and should be available for upto 12 months with instant nationwide access.

Driving slow does not mean accidents will reduce. Can you seriously look at how competent the drivers are. Many people drive too slow and create traffic congestion that will invariably result in people having to take risks and overtake.... I have never seen the police stoping a slow driver who is disturbing the flow of traffic!!!

The Community Police Traffice Police and the minister of mass media should have a PPP - CSR project to use TV spots sponsored by insurance companies on good driving habits as opposed to bad driving habits. Sri Lankas system change has to start with discipline and obeying road rules and ethical and courtesies should be re-enforced. Today Learners who help a youngster get a driving license teaches the bare minimum to get a license. The correct road courtesy is for drivers to stop if a pedestrian is standing at a crossing. Not many will do this in SL.

Hope these apply for so called VIP and back up vehicles. They drive as if they own the road. Laws should be equal to all. There is no reason these morons have to drive like idiots.

Just appoint some registered volunteers to record videos of vehicles being driven erratically and use such evidences to catch the offenders. The volunteers could do such recording discreetly . We have seen many YouTube videos of Sri lankan roads where traffic violations take place. It will be a good source of income for the government too initially.
