Colombo, September 10 (Daily Mirror)- Claiming that there is no chance for last minute election rigging as feared by some, NPP presidential candidate Anura Kumara Dissanayake said today most of the government employees who deal with election related duties such as police personnel, teachers and election department officials are supporting the National People's Power (NPP) this time.

Speaking at a rally in Matale, he said some people feared that President Ranil Wickremesinghe is a crafty man and will resort to any thing at the last minute to prevent a NPP victory. However, Wickremesinghe could do nothing to prevent a NPP victory.

"I am sure Ranil will accept the defeat and peacefully leave. He is a well experienced loser in elections. Some fear that something could be done to the ballot paper or change ballot boxes. Nothing can be done. Ballot papers which are put into the ballot box is counted and results are released by the government employees. They will protect the ballot paper. Ballot boxes are taken from the polling station to the counting centres with police protection. So, police will ensure that nothing will happen as most of the police personnel support us," he said.

Dissanayake said police have done their duty with their heart and soul and said the NPP government will carry out its duty in return soon after victory on September 21.

"We will ensure a respectable police service free of political interference. We will provide them with uniforms, shoes and other requirements on time and will increase their batta payment," he said.

Yes they have to be independent, what he means to say is that the govt servants are not going to fall into the same hole they fell into like last time and will stand up if there are any malpractices that might happen. This is a good thing, if we Sri Lankans can stand and say no to corruption it is a win for future generations, but we are all still living under rocks and dont raise our voice. Aragalaya was successful because people stood up when there was no essentials and life couldnt go forward, but we forgot all that when we felt a bit comfortable and let them rogues rob us in daylight of our tax money and living luxury lives much better than before the aragalaya happened.

Ranil has been a staple in the government before you were born. He knows the constitution like the back of his hand. If anything, he has contributed positively to the country compared to JVP and AKD who only distroy and divide. I think there needs to be a level of cordiality and respect when speaking of people who are older and more experienced. Those are Sri Lankan values, which are no longer practiced. I don't support any party or candidate.

Why are you paranoid if you are so confident of a victory? These statements show that the NPP is on the verge of defeat but is creating false hope among the supporters to sustain their morale. Gobbels adopted a similar tactic when Germany was about to surrender to the Allied forces in WWII, and the rest is history. Do other parties make such statements? No. They propagate their policies and invite people to vote. The NPP guys keep making these ludicrous statements, and people now understand the naivety of the NPP.

Subsequently to the general election being held in the year 1977 certain elections which were held under the UNP regime were almost corrupted including the referendum which was held to decide the term of the office of former president JR Jayawardana Further more those elections were composed of threats impersonation obstruction of the duty and violation of the certain election laws and regulations. Even during the1989 presidential election as we believe certain election related malpractices took place under the pretext of the southern insurgence while R Premadasa was contesting for the presidency. As we know even some poling booth agents were also chased away by the using abusive power by the strong UNP stalwarts specially in southern areas of the country. Therefore all elections should be free and fair in order to protect the democratic rights of the people the election commission along with other government institutions should take necessary measures to hold this election peacefull
