Colombo, December 30 (Daily Mirror) - Just as Parliament is open to professionals under the National People's Power (NPP) government, the positions of Diyawadana Nilame and Basnayaka Nilame in the Buddhist temple system of Sri Lanka should also be open to any citizen of the country, Jathika Paribhogika Peramuna (JPP) President, Asela Sampath said.
Speaking to the media, he said the appointment of the new government has broken the political traditions passed down through generations.
“Therefore, the Basnayaka Nilame and Diyawadana Nilame positions in the Buddhist temple and dewala systems should no longer be restricted to the same lineage or generations," he added.
Sampath also urged the government to conduct an assessment of the income of the dewalayas, as numerous issues have been reported regarding their financial management.
