Parliament, January 07 (Daily Mirror)- Cabinet approval was granted to compensate 17 patients who developed complications after undergoing cataract surgery at the Nuwara Eliya District Hospital, Health Minister Dr. Nalinda Jayatissa said today.

He told Parliament that the committee appointed to look into the issues faced by patients who underwent cataract surgery at the Nuwara Eliya District Hospital due to use of a substandard medicine has submitted its report.

The Minister said legal action will be taken against those involved in the import of the substandard drug.

EXCELLENT DECISION. THE GOVT MUST GO FURTHER AND INVESTIGATE WHAT OTHER SUB STANDARD DRUGS WERE IMPORTED AND SEE IF OTHER PATIENTS HAVE SUFFERED THROUGH THE USE OF THEM TOO. GO AFTER ALL RESPONSIBLE FOR THE IMPORTATION OF THESE DRUGS, NO MATTER FROM WHERE THE DRUGS CAME AMD OR ORIGINATED.

HOW CAN YOU BLAME A COUNTRY WHEN THE COMPANY WHO MANUFACTURED THE DRUG IS TO BLAME. WE HAVE HAD SUBSTANDARD STUFF OUT IN THE MARKET TOO, FOR WHATEVER REASON, THEN WE HAVE TO BLAME THE AUTHORITY WHO CHECKS ALL DRUGS COMING INTO THE COUNTRY.
