President instructs two-weeks suspension of scholarship exam answer script evaluation

The President directed the officials to suspend the evaluation of the Grade 5 Scholarship Examination answer scripts for two weeks.

He took this decision following a meeting yesterday afternoon (30) at the Presidential Secretariat between a group of parents who had protested over the recent Grade 5 Scholarship Examination question paper issue.

Additionally, the parents requested that the President consider holding a re-examination for the first paper of the Grade 5 Scholarship Examination, as they claimed eight questions, not three, were leaked prior to the exam.

Not repeat, just cancel this bloody exam forever which puts heavy pressure on 10 year old children. This is purely parent's pride exam, no any benefit for the kid.

If you hold a re-examination, I would not send my child to sit. Enough pressuring children. Investigate the parents who protested on why they are so insist on this.

I have a suggestion. Majority don't need to hold the exam again. I don't think any child would need to repeat the agony of this exam again. But, since some parents are insisting, ask them to agree on several terms 1. Exam will be held again only for those who request, those who do not request, current answer script will be marked. 2. Those who want the exam, should apply officially and then a date will be fixed for them. 3. Paper marking of both groups will begin on the same day, results will be out on the same day. 4. There can be discrepancies in two exam papers, but it has to be accepted by the parents.

This Scholarship Examination has to be abolished and cancelled entirely, it puts lot of pressure and stress on the children, it is the Parents making a big ha hoo on this matter, please kindly scrutinise and abolish the G5 exam it does not benefit just a pride and pressure

The parents are requesting justice. They have already proven to the authorities that more than five questions were shared prior to the exam as model questions. Almost half of the parents whose children took the exam received model questions that are identical to those on the actual test. They do not want to retake Paper One. Offering free marks for all is not a viable solution, as there are over five model answers that are identical to the questions on the exam.

My parents pushed my sister to pass G5 scholarship. Who was already in a leading school in CMB. It gave an unnecessary burden to her. When she didn't get through they were disappointed. When it came to me I think they've learnt their lesson and didn't even bother. I did the exam for the sake of doing it. Got 130 something marks and to this date I can't remember a jack what was even on that paper.

Some are commenting on justice what nonsense because what certain parents want is to ensure that their children go to recognized schools like Royal, Ananda, Devi Balika etc. There are many students after having good marks from their home schools have opted the cream of the schools in Colombo thus deserting their original schools and have become misfits when it comes to the Advanced Level. Look at the school vans/trains/buses coming from outstations starting from 5 am in the morning to go to school in Colombo and returning at 6 pm thus depriving the children of a good rest because of the craziness of parents. The prudent thing is to abolish the Grade V examination and with the additional resources ensure qualified teachers are allocated to the schools of far flung areas.

The president should not interfere into this. The minister of education appointed an expert committee that included foreigners as well and they made a decision and that has to be implemented. This is not a war situation where the executive president has to intervene. If the president interferes with the decisions of minister of education what is her role. I am confused. This shows the inexperience of president.

The government and the teachers have a responsibility to provide quality and competent education at all schools. Examinations are not that useful. The competence and abilities of a child should be evaluated at every stage without pressuring the child. It is imperative that private tuition classes be abolished immediately. Taxing the tuition masters heavily and setting guidelines for the practice is a democratic way of doing it. These tuition masters should not be allowed to maintain employment as employees of GOSL. If anybody should be tested they should be the teachers, annually, for their competence.

I think the Grade 5 Scholarship should be scrapped and all schools education level should be lifted BUT how can it be done with 6%

increase the intake to National schools by a reasonable number about 500 or have the exam again for those who have taken more than 150 or 160. Earlier it was like that 2 exams general exam and 2nd exam for a few students with a cut off mark .then selections for top students
