Revenue officer among two arrested for seeking chicken kilo as bribe

Two persons including an acting revenue officer of the Weweldeniya Sub Office attached to the Mirigama Pradeshiya Sabha were arrested by the Bribery Commission for accepting one kilo of chicken worth Rs. 1,170 as a bribe.

The Bribery Commission said that the suspects were arrested as they sought a bribe from a meat shop owner in Kosgama to review the annual licence of the shop for the next year.

The suspects, including a field labourer of the Mirigama Pradeshiya Sabha were arrested near the meat shop and the suspects will be produced before the Attanagalle Magistrate's Court.

Good move and hope more of these kinds of petty bribes is stopped. Terminate their employment, Fine them 50 times the amount taken plus some jail time too. Can’t pay the fines, extra jail time! Need to send a deterrent message to all likeminded fellas harassing these hardworking and struggling proprietors.

Most of the government officers are soliciting bribes. Because they are depending on poor salaries. However certain privileged high ranking officers who are belonging to the island wide services like customs police forest education excise and divisional secretaries are taking bribes in millions. Fortunately they are not getting caught easily. Furthermore while the big whales are moving freely the small sprats are getting caught. Therefore the bribery commission should pay their attention to round up the high ranking government officers who are soliciting bribes by inconveniencing the general public
