Colombo, October 2 (Daily Mirror) - The UNP and other opposition groups are willing to accept Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) Leader Sajith Premadasa as the Prime Ministerial candidate if he agrees to a common opposition alliance under a common symbol ahead of the General Election 2024, a former MP said yesterday.
Former MP Saman Ratnapriya who is a close associate of former President Ranil Wickremesinghe told media that Mr. Premadasa is welcome to become the Prime Ministerial candidate if he agrees for a common opposition alliance under a common symbol.
“We are ready to welcome Mr. Premadasa as the Prime Ministerial candidate if he agree to form a common opposition alliance under a common symbol. However, the issue is that the SJB wants the symbol of the common alliance to be the telephone. No alliance is formed under a symbol of a partner of that alliance. It has to be a common symbol,” Ratnapriya said.
“However, we will be making the final decision on the common symbol in a two days’ time and we shall then make an announcement on a common symbol,” he added.
Meanwhile SJB General Secretary Ranjith Madduma Bandara said his party had officially informed former President Ranil Wickremesinghe to resign from the UNP leadership so that Mr. Premadasa could take over the party and go ahead with the forming of a common alliance.” Mr. Wickremesinghe has not agreed to step down from the leadership,” he said.
Meanwhile former MP Manusha Nanayakkara told media that there is a request by some UNPers that the common symbol should be the elephant. “Some UNPers wants the elephant symbol back but we have to think about all these options. This is why we have not come to a final agreement yet,” he said.

Don't worry. There are only 2.5% of idiots left on the electoral roll. And we already have a Prime Minister who is proving to be the best we have ever had.

No, I simply cannot imagine living under Sajith's leadership in Sri Lanka -- neither under Namal's. It will be good for them if they pursue something other than political ambition. I don't think they are President material. They are like two malnourished trees under two huge trees.

Whatever you do, don't disrepute the office of presidency by bringing the former Presidents to the parliament. Let them all be like CBK. Power greedy MR spoiled MS. RW shouldn't follow them.

Yes President Ranil Wickremesinghe to resign from the UNP leadership or in a while he will ruin everyone around him as he did the unp, sira and the rajapakses. Do not touch him.

SJB should stay away from RW and its frogs. Most of the frogs like Manusha, Rajitha, Harin are looking for a way to enter parliament as all will get wipedout at upcoming GE. SJB is an opposition party all this time and has a totally different voter base to that of RW. RW was the government candidate and it was the worst defeat to a president in SL. SJB should later on look for a new leader as SP is unable to win the majority of floating voters and youth

While I welcome SJB to be a strong opposition to complement NPP, not at the expense of inviting the useless corrupt MPs from UNP and forming an alliance. SJB must go it alone! Otherwise, my vote will be for the NPP.

Sajith hasn't to listen or take orders from members of parties destined to the dustbin of political history. As at now the only formidable opposition to the NPP is the SJP. For the SJP to maintain its status, it should not take in any member of the now almost defunct UNP. If it does it will lose even its current strength. That's a certainty.

UNP will make Sajith Common Prime Ministerial candidate and then kick him out at some stage. Ranil, the great strategist can see the distance more than Sajith. SJB must never go as Alliance to a party and person who delayed Sajith Presidential candidate on 2019.

Please Stay In The Opposition Wednesday, 02 October 2024 08:43 AM
Just stay as the main opposition and allow NPP to make a paramount difference in running the country please! All the previous parties and candidates had their chance in the past and didn’t do much to uplift the people’s lives. SL needs a big overhaul of its polices and legislations. With a big majority, they can easily pass them after having a proper debate. Can’t have the opposition to withhold vital changes in legislation as the country needs urgent renewals. Look at countries with stable majority leadership where there is yearly growth in all sectors. Their medical and transportation facilities are relatively excellent in all terms!

`Ready to welcome Mr. Premadasa?` What are these guys talking about? Premadasa and SJB are in a much stronger position than Ranil and his clan as seen from the last election results. On the other hand, if SJB joins in with these rouges that will be the end of the SJB as well. Sajith should take over the UNP now and clean up the party quickly.

With minority parties support Sajith couldn't win. Now Sajith want's to cozying up with Ranil and the UNP. There's no permanent friends or permanent enemies in politics.

SJB should stand alone and not join forces with corrupt politicians from other parties to win more shares. The downfall of Premadasa was the alliances with corrupt politicians in the Presidential election.

Why can't these individuals from UNP retire from politics and allow a new lot to take over. Many will ignore UNP in the coming elections because of the poor track record. Probably the entire country would have lost interest in UNP becos of RW''s 2048 dream world....

You still do not seem to get it. It does not matter how you wrap the package if it contain the people who have been rejected by the people. The wrongdoers and the culprits who looked the other way or participated in ransacking the GOSL treasury. Sajith is better to run alone as long as he dumps his entourage who came in from the 'rain' from their sinking ship, SLPP. Honesty does not appear to be in your vocabulary. UNP will not get more than 500,000 votes in total for sure.(which is better than last time)

Whoever contests under any symbol either elephant or telephone it is not easy to defeat the NPP led by AKD. The people who didn’t vote for the recently concluded presidential election in favour of AKD or any other have realised that the NPP is the only option which govern this country for a considerable period. Though Sajith make a coalition with UNP by expecting the prime minister’s post it will be a mere dream. Further though Sajith loses the election eventually he may be deprived of even the opposition leader post it may be grabbed by somebody else from the UNP by making a big coup

ALMOST ALL OUR CITIZENS ARE FOOLS... I cannot understand why so much talk about alliances and coalitions etc., for Parliamentary Elections in Sri Lanka, where there is proportional representation. Each Party [I only speak in terms of Policies] should contest individually and they will win representation in Parliament - 1, 10, 50, 115, 7 seats on voting PLUS the Bonus seats. After sitting in Parliament individually and separately, on each separate occasion they could vote either together as an alliance or coalition or whatever they call, depending on the circumstances!

BanduXX Wednesday, 02 October 2024 12:36 PM
Each party contesting seperately is a big disadvantage in a proportional system. Because all individual parties lose the cut off votes for a preference seat, while together they concede cut off votes only once.

Repeated mistakes of UNP Should be avoided this time to sake of pure UNPrs.it is pathetic the party still has been disorganize until an election on its doorstep. As NPP does not accept any frogs, SJB would be the only way into the Parliament. All the undesirable politicians are hell bent on getting back into the parliament as they need the income, power and the benefits to thrive. You will see all the unholy alliances form closer to the election. I hope the SL citizens think wisely and vote. Or else we all would be sliding back to the abyss of corruption, mismanagement and debt.

All these preparations are made on the assumption that 2.2 million votes received by Ranil will remain intact for the general election too. The man who received 30000 votes were increased to 2.2 million having used his presidential powers to maximum capacity violating the election regulations. Arbitrary increase of salaries wages of estate worker ect. With the loosing of presidency he has come back to the zero level and SJB will realize this when the election results are out on the 14 November 2024.

If you take the pro Ranil group, you will be a loser for sure at the General election. It will put NPP on a better wicket. Pro Ranil group has enough of rogues and thugs to derail your chances too. All the best sir. The people have rejected the rogues and thugs at the presidential election. Hope the candidates learnt a good lesson. If you need more classes, the people will show it at the general election.

Our country will never thrive with a greedy populace chasing perks, promoting clowns to top positions for personal gain. Just as we are settling with an educated PM who holds a PhD, Sajith, who admitted to being last in his class, rises. Those around Sajith will benefit, not the rest of Sri Lanka

These moves by SJB, UNP and others to form an alliance is based on arithmetic. They think that since Sajith got 34% votes and Ranil 17% votes, the combination will get 51% votes in the parliamentary election. This clearly demonstrate the lack of wisdom in them. Human beings are not mere numbers and since NPP starting the governing of the nation and the pragmatic decisions taken so far, millions of voters who voted for Ranil and Sajith are bound to change and vote for NPP Parliamentary candidates.

Please Sri Lankan citizens, vote to get rid of these parasites in the General Election for once and for all. They are trying to form an alliance to get into parliament to continue to plunder the country. Sri Lanka needs to give NPP full power to get the country out of the mess. As long as Ranil remains UNP leader Sajith should not agree to form a coalition with UNP. Further, even if Ranil leaves and a coalition is formed, those who crossed over from SJB to UNP should not be given a ticket under the coalition. After Ranil leaves the leadership of UNP, UNP must be folded into SJB as UNP is now a weak spent force.

Based on the votes cast during Presidential election, the opposition is going to get more seats in the Parliament if they join hands. Note that 58% did not vote for AKD. What AKD is foing right now is using the official position to carry out election propaganda.

Because of Ranil's greed, he just made ADK the President. UNP should accept that they are not a major force in Sri Lanka any longer. Instead of asking for silly things such as a common symbol to contest the general elections, they should just eat humble pie and accept the telephone as the common symbol. How stupid of them.
