Arguments flared up in Parliament regarding actress Damitha Abeyratne who was arrested on Wednesday with Leader of Opposition Sajith Premadasa calling for her release and to put a stop to state terrorism and the ruling party assuring that she will be freed if she has not done anything wrong.
“ Ms. Abeyratne has not done anything wrong. She has not damaged public property and only exercised her right. It seems that government hates artistes and university students. Stop state terrorism. How can we support the government when harassments takes place,” Mr. Premadasa said.
“A person has to be dealt with if he or she has committed any wrong doings. Ms. Abeyratne will be released if she has not done anything wrong. No one should defend her if she has done anything wrong and everyone should assist in investigations,” MP Namal Rajapaksa said.
Chief Government Whip Prasanna Ranatunga said Ms. Abeyratne is free to file legal action if her rights are violated.
“One should focus on the violence which took place in the country from March 31 2022. Government will not allow anyone to disturb law and order.
SLPP MP K. P. S. Kumarasiri said Ms. Abeyratne has violated the privileges of all 225 MPs by calling them ‘ Kalakanis ( those who waste other people’s time and resources).
”Damitha used indecent language and has violated the privileges of MPs. SJB MP Harsha de Silva questioned as to how only Ms. Abeyratne was arrested for illegally entering into Presidential secretariat as thousands and thousands of people also entered the secretariat.(Yohan Perera and Ajith Siriwardana)
