Eggs, chicken sales drop drastically: Animal Farmers’ Union

Egg and chicken sales have drastically dropped due to increasing prices of eggs and chicken in the local market, National Animal Farmers' Union Convener Sujeewa Dhammika said.

He said the prices of eggs and chicken were increased due to an increase in the prices of animal feed.

The selling price of a white egg in the market is Rs. 63 and a red egg is being sold for Rs. 68.

The price of poultry feed and punnakku (a kind of oil cake made of coconut pulp used as rich poultry food) has increased from Rs. 15 to Rs. 115. A special kind of animal feed which is given to milking cows, was at Rs. 35, has been increased to Rs. 85.

The medicine that is given to animals had to be imported, and therefore, we are finding it extremely difficult to continue with the farming profession, he said. (Chaturanga Samarawickrama)
