The Government Medical Officers' Association (GMOA) yesterday said that they vehemently condemn the brutal attack by police at Rambukkana and called the government to conduct an independent and impartial inquiry immediately.

GMOA Secretary Dr. Shenal Fernando told media that 15 people were admitted to the Kegalle hospital surgical wards with injuries sustained by live ammunition, while three patients were under treatment at the Intensive Care Unit (ICU).

He said their branch office at the Kegalle hospital informed them that those patients were wounded by gunshot injuries on their chests cavity and abdominal cavity.

"A 37-year-old man was admitted to the ICU with injuries to his abdominal cavity. A 40-year-old man was admitted to the ICU with injuries to his chest cavity and abdominal cavity, while another 18-year-old boy was admitted to the ICU with injuries to his abdominal cavity, "Dr. Fernando said.

"Another 15 wounded patients were transferred to the Kandy National Hospital for further treatment. During the height of the protest, 13 patients were admitted to the Rambukkana hospital. Later, six of them were transferred to the Kegalle Teaching Hospital. Another seven have been discharged after clinical attention, "Dr. Fernando said.

Accordingly, some 35 people have been admitted to Rambukkana, Kegalle, and Kandy hospitals, with death on admission to hospital, he said. (Chaturanga Samarawickrama)
