The government has reportedly taken over the handling of the diplomatic issue regarding the Yuan Wang 5 ship directly through the Chinese Embassy in Colombo instead of going through the Sri Lankan mission in Beijing, Daily Mirror learns.
Sri Lanka asked China to postpone the port call of this ship following security threats cited by India.
The Yuan Wang 5, en route from the Chinese port of Jiangyin, was due in the Chinese-run Sri Lankan port of Hambantota on August 11.
It led to a diplomatic scuffle with India, which raised concerns that the ship's visit to Hambantota will trigger security threats.
According to informed sources, the Sri Lankan mission in Beijing has informed the government that the country will suffer dire consequences as a result of the indefinite postponement.
The government is now handling the issue directly with the Chinese embassy. (Kelum Bandara)

So this saga is not over. The China Chinese have this concept of “ loss of face” which they dislike. So to avoid this “ loss of face” they will try to compel Lanka to allow their spy ship that can be easily refuelled in Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore without an issue. But the issue is not refuelling it is spying opportunity being denied

Other than Singapore, both Malaysia and Indonesia never encourage Chinese Spy vessels inside any of their ports. Thus China does not endeavor to ask. This situation has been created by MR for continuously bowing down to Chinese demands during his tenure.

We can allow this Chinese spy ship entry into Sri Lanka if China agrees to allow Revered Buddhist Prelate Dalai Lama to visit Sri Lanka.

Sri lanka is an independent country , and a mainly buddhist one at that. Our coward politicians should not allow themselves to be bullied into not inviting the Dalai Lama. The Chinese communist, in the fantasy land that their minds live in , describe him as one of the worlds most dangerous men !!!!!!

Sri Lanka should demand better behavior of China to stop firing live ammunition and exercises around Taiwan harassing a smaller nation similar to Sri Lanka to consider giving permission entry to this Spy Vessel.

Yes. Sri Lanka should use it's considerable power over China to force them to stop firing missiles around Taiwan.. Given them one warning and say "or else...." They will surely bow down.

Aljazeera Exclusive Investigation excerpts. "Agaléga islanders fear for future due to SECRET INDIAN NAVY BASE. Inhabitants of the remote Mauritian island of Agaléga fear expulsion, can see parallels with Diego Garcia. An investigation by Al Jazeera’s Investigative Unit reveals how, over the last two years, India has been building a 3km airstrip and two large jetties designed for military purposes". India is a threat to World Peace. India's illegal invasion of Sri Lanka gave precedent for USA's Bush, Obama to invade Iraq,Afghanistan, Libya, Syria and threw the geo political balance into Justifiable Contest by other equally powerful states. Hambantota is only a civilian port and can be used by all. So why all this breast beating and baying by India on a harbour to use by all on a busy sea lane and bring much needed foreign exchange to poor SL?.

Mauritius is predominantly Indian, provided passports to those we consider enemies of our Sinhala Buddhist hegemony to travel around the word and end-user certificates to facilitate our enemies arms purchases. In my overseas travels, I may have seen a video of deceased PLOTE leader Uma Maheswaran being felicitated by Mauritius politicians on a visit there in the 1970s or 1980s

Because of Chinese loans many African countries are bankrupt and suffering. Srilanka needs friendship with all countries including China, but srilanka should know to limit China. During Rajapakse regime , too much space was given to China and today srilanka has become Chilanka

China should not be demonised. It was Sri Lanka that borrowed with their eyes closed and then proceeded to loot the money. This saga clearly shows that the Sinhala leadership operates on the basis of "Vaasipathata Hoyyaa". Their bluff and cunning is now coming undone. The Chinese will teach this lot a lesson that they will not forget for a very long time. A basic lesson, the lender calls the shots!

@lanka patriot just one simple question, can a Sri Lanka warship or Sri Lankan Airways pay a friendly visit to any Taiwan Port or Airport respectively? At the same time, does Indian give two pence whenever Sri Lanka does those same activities with Pakistan? Patriotism is the last resort of a rascal.

Our current government is new, but traditionally our MPs in past government look after their matters and wealth earning ahead of the interests of citizens. If our government hoodwink India for our benefit, then who internationally they play a double game with for our gains is no matter. Go for it government make India give us more than their citizens can afford, and when their citizens scream or protest India government give more than they should then we can trust India try harder. Otherwise our government do for us, with whomever you please to benefit us.

Sri Lanka getting indebted to China for massive loans taken is not China's fault. It is the idiotic President at that time who, accompanied by nearly 200 catchers including WW went on a joy ride to China to obtain the loans given without restrictions. Partly spent on meaningless white- elephant PROJECTS in Hambantota and on highways leading to those projects, the balance lavishly appropriated for themselves. Now no way of repaying those loans and people are suffering.

Sri Lanka is in Chinese debt trap...a sorry state....like many other Asian and African countries.... Bangladesh did a very sensible thing and they stayed away. Bangladeshi FM asked Dr. Jayashankar once during a summit that why countries should not allow Chinese investments which is available at lucrative low interest and this will help them to develop. Dr. Jayashankar replied that first countries need to think that do these countries really need those projects and do these projects are realistically going to deliver returns on investments?

How to supply or replenish Chinese Vessel stocks??!! 2. Fuel in short supply! “Fuel queues” and ‘power cuts’ in force?? How to refuel ship, depriving citizens’ being first choice??!! Good luck to the SL gov't. It needs all the help it can get. It's "Deja Vu" like the "Hippo Spirit" Chinese ship load of Toxic-Organic-Fertilizer. That ship refused to leave our territorial waters even after multiple requests and the Chinese Embassy even went further by blacklisting our People's Bank for not paying. At the end, the SL gov't had to cough up $7-8 Millions, perhaps more for nothing. Friends don't co-erce or dis-respect friends! Government's dire predicament is summed-up by our Mission in Beijing: It informed the government that the country will suffer dire consequences as a result of the indefinite postponement. Wow, scary!

Real Debt Trap: Sri Lanka Owes Vast Majority to West, Not to China. Please read in towardfreedom.org. Numerous Western political leaders and media outlets blamed this uprising on a supposed Chinese “debt trap,” echoing a deceptive narrative that has been thoroughly debunked by mainstream academics. In reality, the vast majority of the South Asian nation’s foreign debt is owed to the WEST. As of 2021, a staggering 81 percent of Sri Lanka’s foreign debt was owned by U.S. and EUROPEAN financial institutions, as well as WESTERN ALLIES JAPAN and INDIA. This pales in comparison to the mere 10 percent owed to Beijing. According to official statistics from Sri Lanka’s Department of External Resources, as of the end of April 2021, the plurality of its foreign debt is owned by WESTERN VULTURE FUNDS and BANKS, which have nearly half, at 47 percent. The top holders of the Sri Lankan government’s debt, in the form of international sovereign bonds (ISBs), are the following firms:

The top holders of the Sri Lankan government’s debt, in the form of international sovereign bonds (ISBs), are the following firms: * BlackRock (U.S.) * Ashmore Group (Britain) * Allianz (Germany) * UBS (Switzerland) * HSBC (Britain) * JPMorgan Chase (U.S.) * Prudential (U.S.) The Asian Development Bank and World Bank, which are thoroughly dominated by the United States, own 13 percent and 9 percent of Sri Lanka’s foreign debt, respectively. Washington’s hegemony over the World Bank is well known, and the U.S. government is the only World Bank Group shareholder with veto power. Less known is that the Asian Development Bank (ADB) is, too, largely a vehicle of U.S. soft power. Neoconservative DC-based think tank the Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS), which is funded by Western governments, affectionately described the ADB as a “strategic asset for the United States,” and a crucial challenger to the much newer, Chinese-led Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank
