New President will be elected on July 20

The New President would be elected through Parliament on July 20 as decided by the party leaders on an earlier occasion, Speaker Mahinda Yapa Abeywardena said today.

It was decided at the party leaders and business committee meeting held this morning to call for nomination for the presidency on July 19 and to take the vote on July 20 in terms of the Presidential Elections (Special Provisions) Act, No. 2 of 1981 and Article 40 of the Constitution, Communications Department of Parliament said.

Secretary General of Parliament Dhammika Dassanayake will inform the House about the official resignation of President Gotabaya Rajapaksa tomorrow. (Ajith Siriwardana)
