Private member bill to recognise LGBTQ+ rights in SL



MP Premnath Dolawattee who is to present a private member's Bill to Parliament to amend the penal code to recognize LGBTQ+ rights in Sri Lanka was handed over to President Ranil Wickremesinghe by the MP today.

President's office said the purpose of this Bill is to prevent harassments experienced by LGBTQ+ community in both state and private sector organisations.

Also a statement from President's office said another purpose of the Bill is to make Sri Lanka be in line with the moden world. "LGBTQ lifestyles was regarded as a crime during the Victorian period and but it has been changed with the modern times," the statement said.

It is not considered as a crime in modern psychology as well, the statement added. (Yohan Perera)
