Unable to reduce tuk-tuk fares even petrol prices are lowered: Union

The All-Island Three-Wheeler Drivers’ Union (AITWDU) today said that they are unable to reduce the taxi fares due to mythe recent price reduction of petrol.

AITWDU President Lalith Dharmasekera told the Daily Mirror that the price of one litre of octane 92 petrol was reduced by Rs. 40 and octane 95 by Rs. 30 from last night.

"Even though the prices of petrol have come down marginally, still the quota of petrol allowed to the tuk tuks have not changed. We get only five litres of petrol per week. "With five litres of petrol, we cannot make our income by running hires," he said.

Most of the three-wheeler drivers use illegal methods to obtain additional fuel, apart from their quota through QR code.

Therefore, the Union President requested that the subject Minister should intervene to increase the fuel quota for three-wheeler drivers.

The union also requested the Minister to allow five litres of petrol per day to continue with their service if they are to reduce the taxi fares. They also requested to regulate the three-wheeler service while declaring a fixed charge for all metered and non-metered taxis. (Chaturanga Samarawickrama)
