Boundaries

Yet again Sri Lanka made the headlines for all the wrong reasons. Whilst in one part of the world the travel companies are trying their best to allure travellers to visit our country in the hope of solving some of its financial troubles, in another part of the world we manage to create a great scandal associated with sexual assault and rape. One of the problems with making big bucks is that it sometimes stimulates the worst sort of behaviour from people.  People with sudden big bank accounts tend to develop fantasies and they would do anything to achieve them. Unfortunately, all such fantasies are neither necessarily positive nor realistic. A situation very common all over the world.  In this case, it is common knowledge that Sri Lankan cricketers are paid very well for standing for the country and tend to be revered by the masses, which make them believe they are invincible.

Having clear boundaries is essential to a healthy balanced lifestyle, which is a personal property line that marks those things for which one is responsible. Boundaries define who we are and who we are not. The boundaries we create impact all areas of our lives.  Physical boundaries help us decide who may touch us and under what circumstances.  Mental boundaries give us the freedom to have our own thoughts and opinions. Emotional boundaries help us to deal with our own emotions and disengage from the harmful, manipulative emotions of others. Friendships too have boundaries, whilst spiritual boundaries help us to distinguish religious views and who we wish to worship or believe in. Lack of boundaries leads to many problems which we are aware of, whether it be loving a person, legitimate reasoning, hurting others, greed and selfishness. There are times when one feels guilty about setting boundaries and sticking to them. In fact, it is best to stick to one’s boundaries at any stage of life and there are a very few who are disciplined from the start of their lives. The ones who live within their boundaries tend to lead well balanced guilt free lives.
