Hypocrisy

Hypocrisy is quite the fashion in Colombo where most of the society women in the city are two faced.  They want to hang out with the who is who of Colombo or whoever they have decided are their identified jet setters in the city.  This, of course, has various levels. Recently, a woman known to many, was appointed to a remarkably high position in the banking sector.  As is usual, the women’s brigade and the keyboard warriors were full of praise and congratulated her on the appointment with heavy catchphrases, such as “shattering the glass ceiling” and “we women can rule the world,” to quote a couple.  In the meantime, the very same women were happily sharing defamatory WhatsApp memes about the woman who ‘shattered the glass ceiling,’ coupled with vile insinuations and opining as to why she should not have been appointed to the position. Obviously, the woman who ‘shattered the glass ceiling’ was appointed to the position based on her qualifications, experience and past record.  Nevertheless, the appointment did not sit well with those who seem to thrive by being vicious brought on by jealousy; homemakers are the worst. The height of hypocrisy is when they meet the woman who ‘shattered the glass ceiling’ they are full of oohs and aahs about her appointment, all the while seething with resentment
and jealousy.

The other classic is when an ex-husband of a Dashini re-married and the photographs appeared on social media.  A few women called Dashini to commiserate with her over the loss of someone close to her.  Dashini’s ‘sell by date’ relating to her husband had long passed and she had moved on. One of the dear friends called her with an offer to either visit or take her out for a meal or do something together that would comfort her and followed the invitation by stating that Dashini should not be grieving and what a horror the ex was. Dashini, in fact, was wrapped up with her own work and was glad that the ex had finally re-married and hoped he would not bother her anymore. What got Dashini was when she saw, on social media, a very flattering and sincere congratulatory message on his newly wedded life and wishing him all the good things to come from the very woman who was doing her best to comfort her a few days earlier. Such is the hypocrisy of Colombo.  I guess somethings will never change, the solidarity on social media and the two-faced behaviour.
