Today on the Buzz I speak to the new Miss Sri Lanka for Miss World who seems to be the face of hope. I sure am excited to see more of her and what she hopes to do. With the 2 years of Covid, we have not had many taking up titles and I feel it’s refreshing to see a new, fresh face out there to show Sri Lanka to the world on the big stage. Wishing her all the best! Today I ask her a few questions in the true Buzz style.
01How was the moment when you were crowned Miss Sri Lanka?
The moment was surreal. I just remember standing backstage and thinking, is this really happening right now? My legs felt like jelly and there were just so many butterflies in my stomach. But I also realised that this was a pivotal point in my life and I think there was just a lot of excitement more than anything. My first thought was “Here we go, it’s time to make
my mark!”.
02Who has been an inspiration in your life?
My biggest inspiration was my Grandfather. I actually lost him on the night of the crowning ceremony shortly after it was finished, though I know he would’ve been proud of me. He was a military man but the biggest softie when it came to his family. I think anyone who is able to put their pride aside and be candid with their emotions is such an inspirational person and he was just that; my inspiration and my hero.
03What do you hope to say about Sri Lanka on the big stage?
To place emphasis on how amazing the country is and how lovely the people are. The culture is so rich and combine that with the amazing flora and fauna and all seasons blended together… what’s not to love about the pearl of the Indian Ocean? I can’t wait to gush about my country on the big stage. I would also like to use the global platform to place emphasis on the charitable causes that I am currently endorsing, such as plastic pollution and Marine conservation in Sri Lanka through
Pearl Protectors.
04How important is it for us to promote Sri Lankan talent and personalities to the world according to you?
So important! There is so much untapped talent here in Sri Lanka and I honestly wish that there were better outlets for them to be exposed internationally or on a global platform. From music to acting to the arts, I know so many of my friends and people that I’ve met that deserve so much more recognition for their art, and I hope that one day, Sri Lanka realises that and creates more outlets for them to get the recognition that they truly deserve.
05Who has been your all time favourite beauty queen from sri lanka and why?
Amritaa De Silva hands down. She’s so down to earth, beautiful, brave, kind and humble… the list just goes on! Can’t wait to meet her one day. She’s definitely one of my role models and I really look up to her.
06If you have to describe yourself in one sentence - how would you do it?
Little Miss Happy meets Little Miss Chatterbox.
07How was life in school?
Life in school was incredible. I studied at Asian International School and I was one of those kids that just loved going to school. My most fond memories were the ‘jam sessions’ I would have with some of my friends after school. Some of my friends would bring their guitars and instruments to school just to sneak into the music room and sing. I remember the days I used to come home super late to a very angry mother because I always used to lose track of time!
08What would you say to all the young girls and boys who feel down, and feel like life has been unfair?
Don’t ever stop believing in yourself. Life is unpredictable and it can be difficult, but that doesn’t mean that you aren’t strong enough to face it and it’s okay to ask for help. You can persevere through anything if you put your mind to it. Make it your goal to dream big because nothing is impossible and reach for the stars because trust me, you can achieve anything. So whatever it is you’re feeling now, it will pass. Just believe in yourself and be strong
09Sri Lanka is losing a lot of young talent as they go abroad and find life, what would you tell them?
Times are hard but you can’t give up on Sri Lanka because you are the generation that will lead the future generations of talented people here and Sri Lanka is so rich in untapped talent that we need people to believe in them and make them realise their full potential.
10How excited were you about the Pageant?
I have to pinch myself to remind myself that I’m not dreaming because I am just so excited and it’s honestly been such a dream come true.
