Of Memes & Things

Sri Lankans, fortunately, are resilient beings with a sense of humour, which at times is beyond hysterical.  One thing that has kept me going this past depressing year are the memes that appear with lightning speed on social media. Be it a good, bad or a different situation, you are guaranteed that there would be close to a dozen or more memes being shared on social media few minutes after its occurrence. Most of the memes are in Sinhala and owing to the beauty of the language they are even more hilarious. Those in English are super too. The quick and witty minds that create these memes are amazing.  Many may be offended by them, especially those that they are aimed at but hopefully it is all taken in great humour. But then again, recently I read in the newspaper of the abduction, torture and nailing to a cross of two persons in a highly torturous manner for sharing an alleged defamatory post against an individual on Facebook

I love funny people and being around them since it makes me happy. Sadly, at most times you find yourself amid boring conversations where the general topics discussed are mostly about finances, purchases and possessions. The self-righteous and self-opinionated are worse than the previously mentioned topics. Such conversations become so laborious that you would be happier sitting at home watching TV or reading a book or enjoying the stars at night.

Then comes the next annoying type of person, especially now.  They are the majority who can access Google and get most needed information but still call seeking an address or information on where they could purchase a particular item or service etc.    In today's context all that one must do is to get on the internet and use the many search engines available to source the information that you are seeking.  Unfortunately, they still prefer to have you research and provide them with the short version of the information.  A senior citizen who is clueless on how to use a smartphone or a computer making such a request is quite acceptable. But it is the person who can easily access such information that makes the demands. Guess it takes all types to make the world.  Let us make the best of it in this short time we have.
