Queen of our stage and screen

It was a privilege for me to wish Irangani Serasinghe on her birthday. She was a senior and I was a junior at our Alma Mater Bishop’s College and all of us had the greatest admiration for her even as far back as then in our schooldays . This was long before she became the Queen of our stage and screen. She was then Irangani Meedeniya from a well known family in Ruwanwella.  She acted in several plays in her schooldays and later at the Colombo UnIversity. She was also at The Royal Academy of Dramatic Art and the Bristol Old Vic Theatre School in England. Later on despite her busy schedule as an actress, her great interest was in the environment and in the planting and the preservation of trees. I’m proud that our Alma Mater has placed its footprints in the sands of our country’s history. Irangani’s aunt, Lady Molamure was our first woman senator. Our first executive President  J.R. Jayewardene, our present President Ranil WIckremesinghe,  Sri lanka’s first Professor of Paediatrics Professor C.C. de Silva, and the Queen of stage and screen Irangani are all Bishopians.
