As many as 112 out of a total of 120 housing units of the Madiwela complex near the parliamentary complex remain reserved for allocation to individual MPs upon request, as has been the case right throughout, an official said.

It is the housing complex owned by Parliament and meant for reservation for occupation by MPs. The new government has also decided to allocate these housing units.

An official who wished to remain anonymous told Daily Mirror yesterday that 45 housing units had been renovated at the moment for allocation.

“The rest of the housing units now remain under renovation for occupation by the members of the new Parliament,” he said.

More than 95 MPs have now sent in applications seeking housing facilities in the complex.

The new government has decided to do away with numerous facilities for MPs as a cost-cutting exercise. Among them are the denial of pension benefits and permits for importation of vehicles without duty. Instead, they will be given low-cost, fuel-efficient vehicles to be used during their tenure in the House.

However, the government has not taken any decision so far on the curtailment of other benefits such as insurance benefits and meals provided at subsidised rates.
