Ghafoor Uncle (as he was fondly known by us) showered me with his affection even before my birth, when he would visit my parents often when my mother was expecting me, with kanji (Porridge). To this day, kanji holds a special space in my heart due to this reason.
The ongoing COVID-19 pandemic impacted Sri Lanka profoundly, as is the case in many countries. The pandemic has exposed weaknesses in health care systems globally, and has caused serious gaps and challenges in access to essential information and services for women and girls. Additionally, the reallocation of resources away from these services is taking a toll on the health of women and girls.
This weekend I was sent an article published by the Daily Mirror which was about my father, written by an “award-winning journalist” called Ravi Prasad Herat. I admit that I didn’t choose to actually read the whole article. I mostly just skimmed it for inaccuracies (too many to enumerate) and counted the exclamation points (many).

As cousins we were very close with dear Leslie. We virtually grew up together and spent our childhood and growing up years in close kinship. Leslie was a frequent visitor to our ancestral home at Bullers Lane where we enjoyed fellowship and loads of fun. He was always a very welcome visitor and much loved by the family.

My oldest memory of Amaradasa Gunawardena goes back to the days when we were students reading the magazine “Sanskruthi” that carried important articles on Sinhalese Literature. One of its editors was Gunawardena. The oldest personal acquaintance with Gunawardena commenced with an official engagement when I was appointed to Polonnaruwa District as the Additional Government Agent in February 1975.
