The Gajaba Regiment is one of the most prestigious fighting units of the Sri Lanka Army. Maj. Gen. Vijaya Wimalaratne RWP RSP VSV USP psc, the legendary war hero is the founding father of the Gajaba Regiment. Tragically, on 8 August 1992, this legendary war hero made a supreme sacrifice along with the war veteran Lieutenant Genernal Denzil Kobbekaduwa RWP RSP VSV USP psc and several other high-ranking military leaders in a landmine explosion at Araly Point in Kayts while they were planning an offensive code named “Operation Final Countdown” to liberate the Northern peninsula from the clutches of terrorism.
Maj. Gen. Vijaya Wimalaratne, an old Royalist, joined the Sri Lanka Army as an Officer Cadet on 21 October 1961. After successful completion of training at the Indian Military Academy, he was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant on 01 August 1963 and posted to the Sri Lanka Light Infantry Regiment. In 1969, he joined the Gamunu Watch and became the Adjutant of 2nd (Volunteer) Gamunu Watch. By accomplishing another milestone in his military career, Major Wimalarathne was appointed as the Commanding Officer of 1Vijayabahu Infantry Regiment in 1982 and subsequently promoted to the rank of Lieutenant Colonel in 1983.Thereafter, the 1Vijayabahu Regiment and 1Rajarata Rifle Corps were amalgamated and the 1Battalion of the Gajaba Regiment was formed with the motto of ‘Unity is Strength’ under the leadership of Lieutenant Colonel Wimalarathne. This newly established infantry battalion was formed in Anuradhapura. Maj. Gen. Wimalaratne used the symbol of famous Keteriya of the Sinhala King Gajabahuto to signify the historical background and the Regimental insignia of Gajaba Regiment.
In August 1986, he was promoted to the rank of Colonel and during ‘Operation Liberation’ in 1987, he commanded 1stBrigade in the first-ever three Brigades operation launched in the history of the Sri Lanka Army. In July 1988, he was promoted to the distinguished rank of Brigadier. Determination, courage and the perceptive leadership at the battlefront were the key attributes of him. He had sterling qualities of a military leader. This has been noted by his fellow officers and subordinates including some warriors who steered the final battle the Humanitarian Operation fought against the world most ruthless terrorist organization.
He had a profound knowledge of the country’s history and military operations and was known for recognising and honouring the heroic achievements of his subordinates; particularly those from the Gajaba Regiment. Through this endeavour, the Gajaba Regiment was able to produce many battle-hardened warriors who displayed bravery and dedication on the battlefield.
His professed integrity, professionalism and empathy as the attributes that serve as the pillars of genuine officering at all times. His visionary leadership and professionalism are worthy of celebration at the highest level of esteem and appreciation. It is certain that the Sri Lanka military and the generations to come will remember this heroic military leader with great respect and honour. His name has been penned in golden letters in the annals of Sri Lankan history as a hero immensely appraised by all.
Leaders who leave a lasting legacy often inspire and motivate others to follow in their footsteps and continue the values they exemplified. His legacy lingers in the hearts of the Keterians and this indicates that he made a profound impact on their lives. His services to his motherland demonstrated how much love and affection he had for it.
On the occasion of 31st death commemoration of Maj. Gen. Wimalaratne, it is evident that his memory lives on as a true patriot and a great son of Mother Lanka. As the years pass, Maj. Gen. Wimalaratne’s memory continues to live on; a testament to the enduring power of a leader’s legacy. His life and dedication to the betterment of his nation serve as an inspiration for current and future generations, encouraging them to strive for a better, more united, and prosperous Mother Lanka.
