Book Launch: Metro Colombo Wetlands

The Field Ornithology Group of Sri Lanka (FOGSL) will be launching their new book, Metro Colombo Wetlands, on Saturday, August 26, 2023, at 10 a.m. at the University of Colombo.
The book is a comprehensive guide to the plants and animals that can be found in the Colombo wetlands. It is a must-read for anyone interested in learning more about these important ecosystems.

Book Launch on Saturday August 26 at 10 a.m. at Colombo University

“Based on the Ramsar Convention definition of Wetlands, Sri Lanka as an Island was recognized as one wetland.
This is because of the numerous river systems, man-made water bodies (wewa/reservoirs) that are part of the dry-zone landscape, the numerous wetlands in the low country wet-zone, the lagoons, the marshes, villu systems etc. Significant changes around the Greater Colombo Wetlands resulted in the protection and utilitarian values taking precedence in the management, the FOGSL said in a statement.

In 2018, Colombo became the first South Asian city to become a RAMSAR wetland.
Titled Metro Colombo Wetlands the book is set expected to be a must-read for nature enthusiasts, conservationists, and anyone curious about the delicate balance of urban ecosystems.
The book is a combination of text, pictures and illustrations to guide the readers through the natural oasis within the hustle and bustle of Colombo. Various sections on different biota are authored by experienced enthusiasts and experts and are adorned with their captures of careful observations.

The book launch will take place on Saturday, the 26th of August 2023 at the University of Colombo, at 10 a.m.
“This publication started as a need, recognized by the first Thalangama Wetland Walk held with The Overseas School of Colombo students in 2004, in collaboration with the Field Ornithology Group of Sri Lanka, University of Colombo. FOGSL is presenting to you a comprehensive, primary handbook for the identification of plants and animals in the vicinity of the Wetlands in Metro Colombo.
The accomplishment is a truly participatory effort, through the dedication of numerous persons by coming forth to provide their intellectual property for the common purpose of Wetland Conservation. FOGSL deeply appreciate their contributions.
“We hope you will find this helpful to recognize the value of our Wetlands and help to conserve them for future generations,” states Prof. Sarath Kotagama, in his introduction to the book.

FOGSL welcomes everyone to the launching event and takes on a descriptive journey of the Colombo wetlands by reading this book,” the media statement said.
