Crucify Him

He stood condemned
Before a thronging, jeering mob that cried
Crucify Him! Crucify Him!
Today!
As we condemn our fellowmen
On social grounds
Of race, caste, creed and class
We shout anew
Crucify Him! Crucify Him!
He stood bound
Lashed, scourged, humiliated
And with tongue lashings, slanderous gossip
We scourge anew
And in the background resonates
Crucify Him! Crucify Him!
Beneath the load, he fell
An unwilling Cyrenean, helping him on
No Cyreneans we!
Fellow human tottering under the weight of human problems
Grovelling, wallowing in poverty
We heed not!
Fallen through human frailty
We scorn, we detest, we snigger
We holier than they!
The mockery of a crown, a circlet of thorn
A Royal, purple robe
Ah! the mockery of our lives
We who don might
We who crucify
