I first met Ranjan De Sylva at Medical  College in 1955 when five of us De Silvas sat next to each other. We were called the ‘De Silva family’ and four of us spelled our last name plain old ‘De Silva’ and Ranjan was ‘De Sylva.’ We were quite intrigued by this!

Ranjan proved to be as unique as his name and was the epitome of a gentleman. He was always kind, chivalrous and with a great sense of humour. The emails he sent us over the years brought much hilarity into our lives.

Ranjan had much to contend with in his life, but you’d never have guessed it because he was always calm and smiling. He followed closely the tenets of Lord Buddha, but never inflicted his beliefs or views on anyone. His example said it all!

Despite our busy lives, all of us doctors and friends, used to meet once a year for lunch, but over the years we slowly lost one and then the other of our friends. We started off with eight of us and now sadly we are three. Our lunches will never be the same without Ranjan. My husband D.D.N. and I extend our deepest sympathies and condolences to his two sons and the rest of his family. Whichever world you now inhabit Ranjan, be at peace!
