Daily Mirror’s Associate Features Editor Gamini Akmeemana’s short story ‘The Lucky Charm’ has been awarded the first prize in the prose category of the 2021 literary Competition conducted by English Writers Collective of Sri Lanka (EWC).
In 1997, Gamini also won the Gratiaen Prize for his novel ‘The Mirage’. A journalist and a photo-journalist by profession, Gamini joined the Midweek Mirror (former weekly edition of the Daily Mirror) in 1996 after a short stint at the Island newspaper as feature writer and at the AFP news Agency as a photo-journalist.
The joint second prize of the Prose- (short stories, reviews, biographical sketches etc) of the competition was awarded to ‘Honey Gatherers’ by Sarath Jayasena and Sounds that Echo in Our Hills by Irasara Senarathne.
The third prize was won by Neshantha Harischandra for his ‘Peekaboo’ In the Poetry category the first prize was won by Gardiarachchi Sirimal for his poem ‘Times Paper Times - a paper seller boy’s cry’. The joint second prizes were won by Aanisha Cuttilan for ‘Pettah’ and N.M Piyumi Bhagya Nawarathna her ‘When Rain Falls in Pettah’
The third prize was won by ‘School Online!’ by Nichelle Gnanasunderam
The EWC had organised the Creative Writing Competition – Poetry and Prose -earlier this year. The competition received a record number of entries of a very high standard.
