Sinhala stage play, ‘Guru Geethaya’, based on Russian writer Tchinguiz Aitmatov’s novel ‘The First Teacher’ will go on the boards today (June 15) at 3.30 pm and 6.45 pm at Tower Hall Theatre in Colombo.
Written and directed by Prof. Mangala Senanayake and produced by Jude Srimal, the cast of the play includes Jayani Senanayake, Anuradha Mallawaraachchi, Sudharshana Krishantha and Maali Jayaweerage.
First published in 1962, the story of the novel narrates around the lives of Kirghiz villagers after the Russian Revolution. The story describes a generation of workers brought up to be the labour force for the Russian Imperial Railway, educated in Russian schools for indigenous people, all with the aim of trying to change society.
Revolving around a teacher Duishen, the story relays the life of a teenage girl in a small Kirghiz village, Altynai, who fights against the existing social and cultural system with the support of her teacher and ends up becoming a great personality. Through the communist youthful teacher, Duishen, and his great pupil Altynai, the play gives a refreshing interpretation to the generation of teachers and students around the world.
Behind the screen, costume design is done by veteran actor Kamal Mallawarachchi, music by Prabuddha Budipriya, choreography by Jayani Senanayake and set design and make up by Chathura Dasanayake, Nayanatharade Silva and Yasantha Karunaratne,
Stage management is by Nethmi Ayathma Ranasinghe and the play is organised by Jude Srimal.
