Little Friends at Revels 2023

A much-awaited event, by the Little Friends of the Sri Lanka Girl Guides Association (SLGGA), Revels 2023 was held on June 17 at the Vihara Maha Devi Park with the participation of 1500 Little Friends. These individuals gathered in Colombo from all the nine provinces of the island. The event was organised by the Little Friends sub-committee of SLGGA for its members who are between the ages of 8 to 12 years.

The Chief Guest at the event was the British High Commissioner to Sri Lanka, Sarah Hulton OBE who addressed the gathering and shared her thoughts on the importance of the Girl Guide movement. Prarthana Liyanage, the Vice Chair of the Asia Pacific Regional committee was also present at this occasion. The Chief Commissioner of SLGGA, Ms Sulari Jayawardena along with the executive committee, several past chief commissioners and past presidents of SLGGA joined this event.

The objective of the event was to build leadership values in Little Friends through fellowship. The Little Friends took part in many activities and games in groups of ten which focused on leadership skill development. These were fun challenges designed to help the Little Friends improve essential skills to become better leaders. Engaging in these games and activities helped the participants to form bonds with the other participants from different provinces.

The opening ceremony commenced with a beautiful trilingual theme song which captured glimpses of ‘revels’. Afterwards the Little Friends started on games and activities. Some of the games were conducted by the scouts. The obstacle course was the most popular activity sought out by many Little Friends which aimed at building self-confidence, quick reflexes and determination. The participants took part in craft activities which helps to improve creativity, motor skills, and imagination.

After lunch the participants joined the sing-a-long session at the open-air theatre at the Viharamahadevi Park. The Little Friends of the differently abled branch was represented by the Little Friends of the Chithra Lane school for the special child who performed a graceful dance to entertain the participants. After a day filled with fun, laughter and excitement the Little Friends dispersed with high awareness of team work, tolerance, determination and self-confidence.
