Memorial service on Jan 8 to honour media legend Lasantha
On January 8, 2009 Sri Lanka mourned the death of former Sunday Leader Editor-in-Chief Lasantha Wickrematunge who was assassinated while he was driving to office. Three days after his assassination, an editorial penned by the late journalist was published in the paper. In the posthumous editorial titled ‘Letter from the Grave’ Lasantha foresaw his own death and attributed it to the government.
One excerpt reads as follows; “I hope my assassination will be seen not as a defeat of freedom but an inspiration for those who survive to step up their efforts. Indeed, I hope that it will help galvanise forces that will usher in a new era of human liberty in our beloved motherland.” January 8, 2025 marks 16 years since Lasantha Wickrematunge was assassinated. On Wednesday (8), former Sunday Leader staff, members of Lasantha’s family and others will gather at Lasantha’s graveside at Borella Cemetery for a memorial service. The service begins at 9.00am.
