Mobile medical bed produced at Moratuwa University

The Mechanical Engineering Department of The University of Moratuwa has developed a multifunctional mobile medical bed which can be turned into a wheelchair, a Trolley or a clinical bed.


The AuBiKTransMobi, is a transformable medical platform that includes patient monitoring capabilities like ECG, body temperature and SPO2 ect. The project was initiated based on some real requirements in the Sri Lankan medical sector. 


The team comprising M.P. Suriyage, T.A.B. Prabath and P.K.P.Kumara has developed the bed under the directions of Dr Ranjith Amarasinghe, Mechatronics stream coordinator and Senior lecturer at Department of Mechanical Engineering, Senior Lecturer Shiran Nanayakkara, Gynecologist Dr Madhura Jayawardena while Dr Ratnasiri Ahewage, Director of Sri Jayawardena Hospital, helped the team from the medical sector.

 

The 11 students who specialise in mechatronics had the opportunity to receive a 3-month industrial training and research exposure in China under the joint agreement of the University of Moratuwa and Shangdong University of Science and Technology in 2019


Dr. Ranjith Amarasinghe, Coordinator of Mechatronics said, ‘’The Bed is designed with novel concepts including an extendable wheelbase, a novel four-bar linkage to increase patient comfort and unique bed extension mechanisms. The platform occurs multifunctional system which can be used in three main modes which are the bed, trolley and wheelchair mode. This can be smoothly converted into all the required key clinical positions through the hydraulic based control system. The critical patient’s data (ECG, SPO2, Temperature, blood pressure, etc.) is being collected by an IOT based system which is embedded in the medical bed. The collected data will be stored in an online database in a patient profile and the data is being transmitted to the doctor’s mobile device for real-time monitoring.

 


“The platform was designed and invented from scratch at the university by the group of members with the help of work-shop staff and have successfully integrated the hydraulic based low-level controller and the IoT based patient monitoring system to the mechanical structure.

The project group members extend their profuse gratitude to the Vice chancellor of University of Moratuwa, the Dean faculty of Engineering, Department head of the Department of Mechanical Engineering, the academic staff  of the department of mechanical engineering and the workshop staff for the support extended to them. Further, they thank every person who helped them in carrying out this research and development.
