The Rotary club of Colombo North alongside the Rotaract clubs of Colombo North, Faculty of medicine, Imperial College of Business Studies, Singer Sri Lanka and the Interact clubs of Carey College, Wesley College, and Colombo North initiated project “CanCon” for the second consecutive year to raise awareness and donate to boost the objective of cancer prevention.
During Breast Cancer Awareness Month in October, the initial stage of the project commenced through a dynamic social media campaign. Leveraging the extensive reach of popular platforms like Facebook, Instagram, and LinkedIn, the participating clubs effectively revolutionized the dissemination of cancer awareness. With a primary objective of empowering individuals, educating communities, and nurturing support networks, this campaign aimed to unite diverse individuals in the shared mission of cancer prevention and providing support to those impacted by the disease.
The second phase of the project was initiated with the intention of supporting individuals faced with mobility challenges due to their battle with cancer. Cancer-related bone metastases and fractures can cause instability and difficulty in walking. Additionally, the side effects of certain medications, such as joint stiffness or swelling, can impair mobility. Altogether, these factors combine to significantly affect the mobility and overall quality of life for individuals battling cancer. In response, the clubs joined together to donate wheelchairs to Indira Cancer Trust, a dedicated organization supporting cancer patients. Recognizing the impact of limited mobility on patients’ lives, this donation brings renewed hope and independence to those navigating their cancer journey. The Indira Cancer Trust’s commitment to holistic cancer care is further strengthened by this contribution, emphasizing their unwavering dedication to enhancing the well-being of individuals affected by cancer.
The third phase of the project was a free walk-in breast cancer clinic put together by the clubs at the Oberon Health care clinic in Colombo. Breast cancer is a prevalent and potentially life-threatening disease that primarily affects the cells in the breast tissue. Early detection is crucial in improving outcomes for breast cancer patients. Regular breast self-exams, clinical breast examinations, and mammograms are vital for identifying any abnormalities or suspicious changes in the breasts. The project not only focused on physical exams, but also educated the individuals partaking in the project methods of self-examination and protection from such diseases.
Cancer prevention is an empowering and proactive approach that holds the potential to save lives and reduce the global burden of this devastating disease. By adopting healthy lifestyle choices, taking advantage of available vaccinations, prioritizing regular screenings, and being mindful of environmental influences, individuals can actively contribute to their well-being and reduce the likelihood of a cancer diagnosis. As youth committed to the service of society, we are constantly broadening our knowledge and fine-tuning our strategies to prevent cancer. Let us unite in our collective endeavour to combat this formidable disease, striving tirelessly to create a world in which cancer no longer reigns as a predominant cause of suffering and loss.
