The Chief of Defence Staff General Shavendra Silva yesterday requested people to cooperate with tri-forces and police to maintain law and order during the period between the resignation of the President and the appointment of a new President.
Gotabaya Rajapaksa landed in the Maldives capital Male on Wednesday morning along with his wife Ioma Rajapaksa and two of his security officials on board a Sri Lanka Air Force aircraft as he fled the country hours before his resignation.
While claiming that they were deeply disturbed at the occupation of the Prime Minister’s Office at Flower Road by protesting crowds, the Bar Association of Sri Lanka (BASL) called upon the protesters to return the said premises to the authorities immediately.
An attempt by former Minister Basil Rajapaksa to leave the country through the Silk Route Passenger Clearance Terminal was foiled due to airport immigration officials refusing to let him leave the country following the protests by passengers.
A motion has been filed in Supreme Court seeking an interim order restraining former Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa, former Minister Basil Rajapaksa, former Central Bank Governors Ajith Nivard Cabraal, W.D. Lakshman and former Secretary to the Ministry of Finance S.R. Attygalle from leaving the country without the prior approval of the Supreme Court.
