Champika calls on Govt, Opposition to work together to avert economic recession

Government and the  Opposition will have to come to a consensus with regard to economic policy in order to avoid an economic recession, an Opposition MP told Parliament yesterday.   

Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) MP Patali Champika Ranawaka who was speaking during the debate on 2020 Appropriation Bill said Sri Lanka  was listed as one of the four countries in the world which was heading towards an economic recession by international institutions and agreed that a national economic policy  was essential to avoid such a situation.   

“There will not be such a thing called the Opposition or the Government if the country goes into an economic recession as it is the whole nation which is going to suffer. Therefore it is essential to have an agreed national economic policy to avoid such a situation,” Mr. Ranawaka said.   

“The government is projecting that the country will earn a revenue of Rs 7,630 billion at the end of 2020 but I can assure that it will not go beyond Rs 1,300 billion” he added. 

 
Mr. Ranawaka said  that the construction sector had declined by 73 percent while trade and plantation sector had progressed by 52 percent.
