Easter Sunday Commission Former CNI chief testifies at PCol

The government’s measures to analyse the impacts of foreign agreements such as the Millennium Challenge Corporation (MCC) on national security, commenced soon after ending the country’s civil war, former Chief of National Intelligence (CNI) Kapila Hendawitharana informed the PCoI probing Easter Sunday attacks yesterday.   

Highlighting the importance of reviewing important matters pertaining to the national security constantly,  Mr.Hendavitharana said that even after ending of the war, the then government held threat review meetings with the Security Council. 

“ After ending the war against the LTTE, the then government focused on drug trafficking, human smuggling, extremism and cyber crimes,”  the witness informed the commission.  
He said that a special unit was also established to monitor religious extremism in the country after ending the war and officers attached to CNI received special foreign training.   
Mr.Hendawitharana said that the government had received details of over 100 preachers who  had come to the country within the period of 2009-2015 to preach extremism and 
the government took measures to deport such preachers.
