Establishing of a State Media Centre Cabinet approval to establish NDMC

The cabinet has approved to establish a “National Development Media Centre” (NDMC) under the Ministry of Mass Media and Information, to disseminate what Cabinet spokesman and Media Minister Keheliya Rambukwella said ‘accurate information on government policies and development efforts to the people’.

  
“It has been identified that the public policy contained in ‘Vistas of prosperity and splendor’ the Government Policy Statement, the development strategies expected to be achieved by it and their real progress, are not properly communicated to the people. Hence, the NDMC,” Minister Rambukwella stressed.   Minister Rambukwella said that the Cabinet also approved a proposal made by him to amend the Sri Lanka Press Council Law enabling the Sri Lanka Press Council to cover electronic, print and new media as a tribunal for journalists and media institutions.  

Minister Rambukwella also said the Cabinet approved a proposal made by him to amend the Sri Lanka Rupavahini Corporation Act of1982 in order to deal appropriately with the current intense media competition, the need to change the composition of the Board of Directors comprising 7 right now to 9, to give the Rupavahini a competitive edge, powers and more independence.   The Sri Lanka Rupavahini Corporation established under the Sri Lanka Rupavahini Corporation Act, 1982 has played a significant role in the field of media in Sri Lanka for the past 38 years, he noted.
