GL proposes: Leading school from particular area to assist smaller ones

A leading school from a given area should be selected and assigned to assist the small schools clustered around it as a step in the direction of finding a solution to the crisis involved in Grade 1 admissions, Education Minister Prof. G.L. Peiris said yesterday.

He made these remarks addressing a meeting in Badulla, to resolve issues in the education sector at district level. The Minister addressed matters such as the lack of teachers for subjects such as science and mathematics, the restructuring of schools with less than 10 Advanced Level students in each stream, infrastructure shortages and disaster loans for teachers.  “We see this as an important occasion.  When we conduct our public day, there are around 3,000 people coming to us. As a solution to this, I, along with the Prime Minister, decided to go before people, in their own areas. 

That is why, I, as the Education Minister, arrived here with my officials,” he said.
