A wild elephant that was bogged down in Eranawilluwa marshy land in Wanathawilluwa had breathed its last without being able to escape.
Wildlife officers said the well grown elephant was about 35 years of age and that it had fallen into a pit in the lake about two days ago and died.
Residents of the area said Eranawilluwa is a tricky marshy land covered with vegetation and that no one dared to step into it during the rainy season.
Wildlife officers said the jumbo walking across the jungle had fallen into a pit and died after suffering for about two days.
Wildlife Veterinary Surgeon in the North-Western Wildlife Zone Dr. Isuru Kottegoda visited the scene and held the postmortem.
