Local Authority to be set up to provide efficient public service:Sarath Weerasekera

State Minister of Provincial Councils and Local Government Affairs Rear Admiral (Rtd.) Dr. Sarath Weerasekera, yesterday pledged to set up a Local Authority System that provides effective and efficient service to the public.  The Minister said that a programme will be implemented in collaboration with the ICTA whereby the people will be able to obtain their services on line efficiently. “Activities such as reservation of crematoriums etc. could be done on line. It will eliminate the need to bribe mediators to obtain services . This Ministry has been gazetted as a separate State Ministry to ensure delivery of an effective administrative service to the public through Local Authorities,” the Minister said.   

“We expect to make every city attractive and smart. During the President’s tenure as Secretary to the Ministry of Urban Development, The City of Colombo became a capital in Asia known for speedy development.   

The establishment of comfort centres is a priority need. There is no prominent comfort centre in any of the cities. So, people who come to obtain services from other areas face difficulties. The State Minister said he intends to establish such comfort centres with required facilities for the benefit of the public.
