No decision has been taken to discontinue the vehicle emission testing programme but a new test will be introduced as a road-worthiness test soon in the future, State Minister for Transport Dilum Amunugama said.

“However, the new testing process by the DMT will inspect the running and body conditions of the vehicle, brightness of headlights, condition of tail-lights, brake system, tyres, sound of  the exhaust pipe, vehicle horns, condition of steering wheels and ball joints,” he said.

“The Ministry will then recommend the issuance of the Road-worthiness Certificate along with the Emission Testing Report once the faults are rectified,” he said.

The State Minister said that although vehicles will not be checked 100 per cent for road-worthiness, the vehicles should gain pass 50 per cent points at the test for it to be used in the following year.
