Sri Lanka could be a victim of a cold war between USA and China, an SJB MP said yesterday. SJB MP Mujibur Rahman told a press conference that the recent visit of Chinese Communist Party Leaders and the visit of US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo could result in Sri Lanka becoming a victim of a cold war between China and USA.
“Mr. Pompeo was scheduled to visit only India. However, his South Asian tour was extended to Sri Lanka only after the visit of Chinese high-powered delegation. The Chinese delegation did not come to Sri Lanka just to distribute masks and to assure financial assistance to Sri Lanka. It was this visit which prompted the US Government to send its Secretary of State to Sri Lanka. Mr. Pompeo is not coming to attend a tea party. It is common knowledge that there is a cold war between USA and China.
Therefore, Sri Lanka could become a victim of this cold war given the present situation,” Mr. Rahman said.
“Sri Lanka should follow a non-aligned foreign policy without getting involved in international conflicts,” he added.
On a different note, Mr. Rahman said some SJB MPs who voted in favour of 20th Amendment are the ones who had met Zahran who masterminded the Easter Sunday attack in April last year.
