A group of schoolchildren from Colombo who went on an excursion to Hantana during the school vacation and lost their way were rescued by the Police and the Army.

They were 16 and 17 years of age and from Kiribathgoda and Colombo. They had started their ascent from Sarasavigama in Peradeniya on Wednesday (04). The group of schoolchildren who lost their way had informed police that they were in difficulty.

The Police with a group of Army personnel had traced the location and brought down the students safely with great difficulty in the early hours of last morning.

A senior police official said it was not advisable to climb the Hantana mountain in December due to the thick mist and strong winds. Tourists should seek the help of a guide to do so, he said.
