The Department of Railways is hopeful that the upcountry mainline affected by earth slips and rock falls could be cleared of obstructions and the train service between Colombo and Badulla would be back to normal today.
The railway line had been affected by a massive earth slip at Uduwara bringing the train service between Badulla and Demodara to a stand still for several days.
A group of workers have been removing the earth and rocks under the instructions of the Nan Oya Railway Supervisory Manager Anton Viroshan and other officials. The officials said the heavy rain that continued unabated was an obstacle to the clearing of the railway line.
They said fair weather was now being experienced in the area and that they were hopeful of restoring the normal train service between Colombo and Badulla today.
