The National People’s Power (NPP) will suspend strike actions by workers loyal to it but there will be no bar on other forms of trade union actions, a party official said.
NPP executive committee member Dr. Nalinda Jayatissa told Daily Mirror that striking work is only one of numerous trade union activities. “We will not lead our workers to strike work ahead of elections because of difficulties being faced by people. There are other numerous trade union activities. Even the conduct of a demonstration is a trade union act. Those are legitimate trade union rights. We don’t suspend them at this hour. However, we don’t encourage striking work,” he said.
