The Tamil men and women who had been held in prison over militancy should be released forthwith as the government had said that there was peace, member of the Northern Provincial Council Anandi Sasitharan said in a media release yesterday.
“Although a resolution was passed in the NPC that Tamil prisoners should be released, nothing has been done yet. Since 1983, it has been a well known fact that Tamil prisoners are tortured or killed,” she said. “It is a not unusual that such Tamil prisoners die suddenly and the government covers up the truth,” she charged.
She said that at the recently held national convention of the Ilankai Tamil Arasu Katchi a resolution was passed to urge the government to release such prisoners. “It causes great anguish for us to hear that these prisoners were without food, medical attention, health facilities or legal assistance. Sinhala prisoners beating up and torturing Tamil prisoners should stop. The prison guards ill treating Tamil prisoners should stop,” she said.
“A deadline should be imposed within which time all such prisoners should be released. If the government wants to earn the good will of the people of the North and East, all prisoners taken-in over militancy and involvement in the conflict should be released,” she said.
