Ten new wheelchairs were donated to HelpAge Sri Lanka (HASL) by AIA Insurance Lanka Ltd recently for distributing among underprivileged elderly citizens in the country.

According to AIA Insurance the donations were made to coincide with the Vesak festival that fell in the month of May.

AIA, Chief Executive officer Chathuri Munaweera highlighted the invaluable service rendered by the AIA Insurance towards the needy community in the society with various donations and said this year AIA selected one of the leading charities working for and on behalf of the destitute older persons in the country, the HelpAge Sri Lanka as their selected social service organization.

She said AIA decided to donate wheelchairs for their Vesak campaign this year considering the plight of many less-privileged needy elders since many elders who are physically handicapped with limited mobility andalso not in a financial position to purchase wheelchairs due to theunbearable cost in the open market.

HelpAge Executive Director Samantha Liyanawaduge profoundly thanked AIA Insurance for making such a huge donation considering the plight of poor elders in our society, especially those who have no adequate funds to purchase wheelchairs and this donation will be a great relief for them at this moment.

He highlighted wheelchairs are immensely needed less-privileged citizens to carry out their daily routine and also engaged in self- employment activities and said the elders aregrateful to AIA Insurance for the donation.
