Anuradhapura North Water Supply Project nears completion

Access Engineering PLC (AEL), Sri Lanka’s foremost civil engineering enterprise is nearing completion of the Anuradhapura North Water Supply Project (ANWSP) - phase I, eyeing the end of March 2022 for completion.
Having begun construction of the project back in May 2018, the ANWSP aims to provide safe drinking water to residents in the Medawachchiya and Rambewa Divisional Secretariat Divisions (DSD) in the Anuradhapura District.

The project is funded by the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) and implemented by the National Water Supply and Drainage Board with AEL serving as the main contractor.

AEL’s scope in the project includes the construction of intake facilities, water treatment plants, water storage structures, mechanical, electrical and building works. The project will also build three ground sumps, and four water towers in six locations; Mahakandarawewa, Rambewa, Madawachchiya, Issinbassagala, Ethakada, and East Rambewa.

The Medawachchiya and Rambewa Divisional Secretariat Divisions (DSD) in the Anuradhapura district have seen people depend on unsafe ground water. The consumption of the ground water has caused dental and skeletal fluorosis, and chronic kidney diseases.

The ANWSP aims to provide a safe, potable water service which will directly enhance the quality of life of these communities, which are expected to expand to over 115,000 people in the coming years.

Apart from carrying out construction work of the project, AEL conducted a CSR event by carrying out a tree planting programme at the Ukkulankulama Vidyalaya in Mihinthale. Under the programme 250 saplings were provided in the first stage.

Furthermore, the AEL also fully renovated a library at the Mahakandarawewa Primary School. Necessary facilities were provided to equip the library for the betterment of the students in the area.
