World Bank provides aid for Projects in North, East , Uva



The International Development Association of the World Bank has agreed to provide Rs 21 billion (USD 182 million )  for implementation of the Provincial Roads Project, Northern Emergency Recovery Project and Community Livelihoods in Conflict Affected Areas Project.


The  Provincial Roads Project with  a funding of Rs 12 billion ( USD 105 million) will upgrade and rehabilitate 150 km of provincial roads in Uva Province ,100 km of provincial roads in Ampara District in Eastern Province and another 100 km of provincial roads in Jaffna District in Northern Province. The project is aimed in improving access to social economic activities in Eastern, Uva and Northern Provinces through the sustainable management of improved road infrastructure. The people in these provinces rely on agriculture as a main source of income and improved connectivity to markets will facilitate them getting the best prices for their products.


The objective of the Emergency Northern Recovery Project is to support the Government of Sri Lanka’s effort for re-settlement and re-establishment of the livelihoods of Internally Displaced People (IDPs) in the Northern Province. It will be achieved through the assistance for: emergency cash support to conflict affected households enabling them restart their lives; medium term economic security through rehabilitation of agriculture and other livelihood assets and restoration and improvement of essential public infrastructure and facilities. The Project expects to reach about 100,000 IDPs, covering Phase three and four of the Government five-phased Plan for the resettlement of IDPs. The World Bank will provide Rs 7.5 billion (USD 65 million) for this project.
